What is PoE?

Simple definition

Power over Ethernet is a method of sending power and data over the same Ethernet cable, commonly used for CCTV cameras, intercoms and wireless access points.

Why it matters in wiring diagrams

PoE reduces the need for separate local plug packs, but the switch or injector must have enough power budget for the connected device.

When reading a wiring diagram, this term usually affects cable choice, power path, signal path, device selection or commissioning notes.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the term means the same thing across all brands.
  • Ignoring the actual terminal names in the manufacturer manual.
  • Not documenting how the term applies to the final installed system.
